Zip Racing has officially entered two cars in the 51st annual 12 Hours of Sebring. One car has Steve Ivankovich, Andy Lally, and myself, as nominated drivers, and the other is listed with Brent Sherman behind the wheel, and two more drivers to be announced in the coming weeks.
The bad news for the 2003 season is that Zip’s familiar car numbers, numbers 34 and 35 will not be available in ALMS for 2003. As a result the team has settled for numbers 33 and 39. 33, as we all know, appears on the back of a Rolling Rock bottle, but Zip Racing is definitely a Michelob Light kind of team so that isn’t fitting. It isn’t the number of any great football player I can remember either. We named our first car Sweetness after Chicago great Walter Payton who also wore the #34. #44 would have been OK since the greatest Redskin ever, John Riggins, wore that number, but instead we got two threes, not two fours. One three and I don’t even need to explain, but so far #33 simply has to find greatness on the side of the Zip Porsche. Number 39 is the same story. Double the first digit and…you get the idea. The Sebring entry list is not finalized but so far there are 65 cars listed, 30 of which are GT cars. And this year it won’t be an all Porsche show. Seven different manufacturers will be represented in the class at Sebring with many expected to run the entire season. This year’s competition will be unlike anything the Zip team has seen before. But we will be ready. In the mean time if you think of any other great #33s or #39s let me know via E-mail. To check out the Sebring entry list click here. - Spencer |
