After a strong showing in pre-race practice the Zip Porsche 911 driven by Spencer Pumpelly and Andy Lally was taken out of contention when debris on the racetrack cut a hole in one of the tires.
The Zip Racing team, back in action for the first time since Sebring in March, started the race from fourth position in the GT class. Pumpelly started the race and had a strong run going until lap 23 when the tire was punctured. The Zip Racing crew was ready in the pits but by the time Pumpelly had limped the wounded car around the two and a half mile track and down the pit lane an entire lap was lost to the GT leaders. The team continued with fresh rubber and was able to make up several lost positions. At the halfway point Pumpelly handed the car over to Lally. Lally set out on a mission to get back into the hunt, taking back even more positions as his stint went on. Andy made it all the way up to 8th when the car suddenly lost all drive out on the course. Damage from the initial tire failure caused the driveline to finally break ending what was shaping up to be a good weekend for Zip Racing. The team is hoping for better luck at the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma later this month. |
