Last weekend an Internet connection was harder to find than a hair on Steve’s…head, so I was not able to update the site during the weekend so here is the full report, at leat the first half of the full report.
The weekend started with the Go-Kart race in Elmira. I was late because I got pulled over by a cop and was cited (I am not kidding) for unapproved stickers on my rear window. Steve was there to fill in for the GT team but instead decided drinks at the Outback with the guys would be more interesting. Gerry Green was happy to fill in and help the GT team along to a mediocre finish. The first practice day went well with Brent getting his first taste of the car, and found it slightly different than the Riley and Scott he drove last year. The car was fast out of the box and minor changes were made to make it better. Saturday qualifying revealed that the Zip car was fast. The team turned a lap of 1:54.009, the fastest lap by a Porsche 911 all weekend and about one half second below last year’s track record. Unfortunately it was only enough for fourth in GT as the V-8 BMW, the Ferrari, and the Mosler were all faster. The Mosler’s lap of 1:51.856 was surprisingly fast for a GT car. Check back tuesday for the rest of the story and a preview of what may be seen on the Speed Channel when they show highlights of the race. - Spencer Pumpelly |
