HENZLER CLAIMS TOP SPOT IN GT QUALIFYING

2/3/04
From Grand Am:

In his first Rolex Series appearance, German Wolf Henzler placed the No. 71 Farnbacher Racing Porsche GT3 Cup on the GT class pole position. Henzler logged a best lap of 1:55.958 (110.523 mph), topping the next closest qualifier by more than half a second.

"Last year I raced in Europe in the Porsche Supercup and the German Porsche Cup," Henzler said. "This is my first race at Daytona. My first time here was in the test four weeks ago, and that was also my first time running on banking. It is fantastic. When I first saw it I felt it would be easy to learn, but after a few laps I realized it was really difficult."

Qualifying second on the GT grid was Randy Pobst in the No. 36 TPC Racing Porsche GT3 Cup on the strength of a lap at 1:56.474 (110.033 mph). This weekend's race will be the first time that TPC Racing--which won the Rolex Series Super Grand Sport (SGS) team championship in 2004--will compete in the newly-reconfigured GT class. Andy Lally--who won the SGS driver co-championship with TPC Racing last year--put the No. 65 TRG Porsche GT3 Cup third on the GT grid with a lap at 1:56.567 (109.945 mph), followed by Johannes van Overbeek in the No. 75 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup at 1:57.110 (109.436 mph). Robin Liddell took the final locked-in spot by qualifying fifth on the GT grid and 30th overall with a lap at 1:57.298 (109.260 mph) in the No. 73 Baldwin-Tafel Racing Porsche GT3 Cup.
