In what would be the final race of the season for the TP team of Spencer Pumpelly and John Littlechild, a broken half shaft ended hopes of finishing the season on the podium. As the race entered it's final stages a three way battle had developed for third place between Spencer, his teammate Randy Pobst, and points leader Andy Lally. The trio ran nose to tail and often side by side for the last ten laps with Spencer holding to point in the battle for the last podium spot. With just over a lap to go as the group was going through the oak tree turn the left halfshast on Spencer's car snapped causing him to loose drive.
